Care Team Advocate Tools
What is a “care team member?” – A physician, nurse, nurse practitioner, physical therapist, hospitalist, care manager, or other clinical leader involved in providing care for patients at North Carolina’s hospitals and health systems.
Chambers of Commerce
Engaging business leaders in the critical issues faced by hospitals is vital. The issues that impact the way that hospitals deliver care ultimately impacts the health of their workforce, their ability to provide healthcare coverage to their employees, and their incentive for keeping (and bringing) business to their community. Here are tools to reach out to your local Chamber of Commerce for their support.
Economic Impact of Hospitals and Health Systems
NCHA recently worked with RTI to create and release an economic impact report outlining the incredible impact that NC hospitals have beyond acute care, enhancing the economic strength of our state. NCHA is partnering with health systems all across the state to present the findings from this report to groups of economic developers, workforce board members, chamber leaders, and community members. Consider how you may want to share this message in your community, and reach out to Emily Roland to help coordinate the effort. (dates: Fall 2017 – Spring 2018)
NCHA has found that the best way to learn about what’s working in advocacy is for hospital and health system professionals to hear directly from their peers. As we learn about the great work happening in the field to build grassroots advocacy networks and hospital champions, NCHA will share those ideas and resources here, while also providing the tools so that our members can recreate these efforts at their hospitals.
Community Leaders Luncheon (CLL)
The Community Leaders Luncheon is an invitation-only event for community leaders, activists, and key influencers to have a candid conversation with their local hospital President to ask their most pressing questions about their local healthcare system. The event is organized by the hospital’s Foundation, but serves as a pipeline for various hospital initiatives, including identifying potential hospital advocates and champions.
Trustee Communications
Trustees often become so consumed with organizational issues and challenges that they lose sight of the need to consistently and forcefully connect in meaningful ways with their communities. With growing scrutiny of the health care field in general, and of the “community benefit” provided by hospitals specifically, hospital boards have a unique opportunity to ensure that their organizations consistently engage in meaningful ways with a broad range of community stakeholders.

Trustee Immersion Program
The Trustee Immersion Program is an opportunity for hospital board members to spend a day in scrubs and be deeply embedded into the hospital operations. Beyond a hospital tour, the immersion experience allows these hospital leaders to see the realities of healthcare in their region and to speak candidly with those who provide that care. The result is powerful new insights into management’s challenges, the Board’s mission, and the community’s needs.
